3.21 World Down Syndrome Day
Since 2012, the United Nations has observed World Down Syndrome Day every 21 March to raise awareness and advocate for the rights of people with Down Syndrome. The date 3.21 symbolises the extra copy of chromosome 21 that most individuals with Down Syndrome have. This extra chromosome blesses our friends with Down syndrome with a genuine and sincere spirit, filling their lives with possibility and meaning.

The Meaning of Mismatched Socks
A sock’s shape is like a chromosome, and a pair of mismatched socks is like the extra chromosome found in people with Down Syndrome. Different, yet each with its own unique character. With a shift in our mindset, even different colours and patterns can create something wonderful. With more acceptance and inclusion, our friends with Down Syndrome can live lives just as vibrant and meaningful as anyone else.
321 Smile
People with Down Syndrome often have a simple, open-hearted, and pure nature. Their smiles are infectious, spreading joy to everyone around them. Inspired by these lovely smiles, our president, Mrs. Victoria Tang-Owen, created the “321 Smile” logo as a memorable symbol to share their positive energy with the community.
Design concept:
- A ribbon fashioned from mismatched socks conveys a friendly and gentle impression, symbolising our friends with Down Syndrome;
- Blue and yellow represents hope, happiness and our acceptance of and support for individuals with Down Syndrome.

Causes of Down Syndrome
Down Syndrome is caused by having an extra copy of chromosome 21. There are three main types:
Trisomy 21: Accounting for about 95% of people with Down Syndrome, Trisomy 21 means that every cell contains three copies of chromosome 21.
Robertsonian translocation: This type accounts for around 5-6% of cases. It happens when the extra copy of chromosome 21 attaches to another chromosome.
Mosaicism: In about 1% of cases, some cells have an extra copy of chromosome 21, while others do not.
